THE TRIAL OF SUSAN B. ANTHONY

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. Was Susan B. Anthony’s vote in 1872 an act of civil disobedience? What is civil disobedience? Is civil disobedience ever authorized or ethical?

2. What do you think the role of a judge is in a criminal trial? What is your opinion of how Judge Hall tried Ms. Anthony’s case?

3. Ms. Anthony’s lawyer paid her bail after her application for a writ of habeas corpus was denied without consulting her, thus freeing her and eliminating any appeal she might have had of that issue. Is that what a criminal defense lawyer should do? What is the lawyer’s obligation to her client?

4. State and Federal election officials approved Susan B. Anthony’s voter registration and actual vote at the poll. So what did she do wrong? Wasn’t she entitled to rely upon those decisions made by government officials?

5. Which was the better course: the efforts of women’s suffrage supporters to change the law through the court system and legal challenges, or working to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution?
